Sports Massage is designed to treat dysfunction within the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia.
This could mean improving function/movement, decreasing pain, improving posture and aiding in the recovery of injuries.
This is achieved through using various hands on techniques such as:
These techniques are used to mobilise or manipulate the spinal column and/or the peripheral joints.
The intention is to release restricted structures, improve range of motion and decrease pain.
(Don’t worry… The “CLICK” is not always necessary).
In short, dry needling can be a fast and effective method of relieving trigger point pain.
Sterile, single-use acupuncture needles, are inserted directly into the muscle tissue and are used to stimulate the intended trigger point.
This can result in rapid relaxation of the involved muscle fibres and decreased nervous sensitivity, causing pain and dysfunction in the area to subside dramatically.
(DUE TO LEGAL RESTRICTIONS, DRY NEEDLING CAN NOT BE OFFERED DURING MOBILE APPOINTMENTS)
Myofascial dry cupping is where a cup is placed over an area and a vacuum is created.
This vacuum decompresses and creates space between the layers of tissue, drawing out any stagnated blood and allowing fresh blood to flood the area.
A stretch is also applied to the affected fascial and muscle tissue, increasing mobility and flexibility.
Please note that this treatment can leave red/purple circular marks on the treated area, which can last for up to 20 days.
IASTM usually refers to the use of surgical-grade stainless steel blade like instruments.
These tools are another great option for detecting tissue dysfunction and for mobilising superficial and deep soft tissue.
Please note that IASTM can leave red marks on treated areas.
Every individual responds differently to Manual Therapy/Sports Massage and it is not uncommon to feel tired after a treatment.
Depending on the treatment, it is also possible that treated areas may feel tender for around 24/48 hours after.
People tend to only associate the term “Muscle Memory” with the body being able to remember positive movements, for example riding a bike, or building muscle.
But unfortunately, the same is also true with the body being able to remember dysfunctional patterns.
With that in mind, it is important to remember that visiting a Manual Therapist is only a small part of your journey. For lasting positive results, the most important thing is the consistent self-work you put in on a daily basis.
